Books

The following recommendations were submitted by Cliff Eberle.

"Desiring God" by John Piper. Piper calls himself a "Christian hedonist" and aims to persuade the reader that "the chief end of man is to glorify God BY enjoying him forever". He persuades me that learning to enjoy God is paramount; that following Christ is not a life of unsefishness, but rather a passionate pursuit of happiness/joy; and that God is most glorified when we are experiencing great joy.

"The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. A former atheist and law journalist retraces his journey to belief by interviewing Christian experts on the scientific, archeological, medical/psychological, and historical evidence that Jesus was who he claimed to be, died on the cross, and rose again. This book is powerfully persuasive that our faith in Christ is solidly supported by evidence and reason.

"The Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel. Strobel uses his technique of interviewing "subject matter experts" on eight of the Big Questions of faith:(1) evil and suffering;(2) miracles and science; (3) evolution; (4) genocide ordered by God in the Old Testament; (5) Christ's claim to be the only way to God; (6) Hell; (7) the church's violent history; and (8) dealing with doubt. This book will not vanquish all of our doubts or struggles with the tough questions, but it will inform and illuminate them, and help us to move forward in our struggles with those questions.

"The Case for a Creator" but Lee Strobel. Again Strobel interviews "subject matter experts" to illuminate issues related to the origins of the physical universe and of living organisms. It is one-sided in that all interviewees are disciples of Intelligent Creation/Design, but it presents compelling evidence supporting the existence of an intelligent Creator/Designer.

"The Mind of St. Paul" by William Barclay. This book explores the contexts of Paul's rearing, training, and ministry, then topically addresses Paul's theology as presented in his letters. It shows the coherence and harmony of Paul's teachings, and the great pictures/metaphors he uses, in a way that is difficult for the typical layperson to extract in verse-by-verse or book-by-book Bible study.

"Spiritual Entrepreneurs" by Michael Slaughter. The author reveals six core principles for risking spiritual renewal. It is a ringing call to radical discipleship that made me squirm in my seat. A short read at 128 pages.
